Errors are called bugs because Admiral Grace Hopper was once diagnosing a problem with a faulty computer and found an infamous dead moth inside the machine. It was determined that the moth had shorted out the circuitry thus the system's failure was attributed to a "bug in the system". The process of locating and removing bugs then became known as "debugging". The term "bug" is used to metaphorically describe systematic failures in general and is synonymous with "gremlins".

A stop error is also sometimes called a "blue screen of death" or simply "blue screen." Another couple common of terms for a problem in programs or systems are "bug" and "glitch."
