One uses heat-proof utensils to stir foods that are cooking. Wooden spoons and spatulas have been used for many centuries because they are durable and their handles remain cool to the touch. Metal utensils with heat-proof handles are also popular and durable. In recent decades, silicon utensils have become increasingly popular.

A wooden spoon will not conduct heat, so is the best choice. The metal spoon is a good conducter of heat, and will most likely burn your hand. The plastic spoon, will not burn your hand, but is not a good material to stir hot food, so it will most likely melt.

If you are right-handed, use your right hand. If you are left-handed, use your left hand. By using your dominant hand, you won't be as likely to burn yourself or cause the hot food to splatter or spill.
