The pineapple was found in Paraguay and in the south of Brazil. From there the fruit was spread throughout South America and Central America and then into the Caribbean areas, including the West Indies, That is where Christopher Columbus first encountered them.

South America is the origins of the bromileads such as the pineapple. It has been spread across that continent and through a number of islands in the Caribbean and the Pacific, including Hawaii.

Pineapples are indigenous to South America, likely the area between Brazil and Paraguay. The natives spread it through South America to the Caribbean, Central America and Mexico, where it was grown by the Aztecs and Mayas until Columbus brought it back with him to Europe.

The pine apple grows close to the ground in the center of a plant that is made up of thin rigid long pointy leaves that are up to about 800 mm long. They all point outwards and upwards from the center of the plant. the pineapple or pine apples grow from near the centre over where the leaves emanate from the plant.
