Tell what you know about Coelacanths?

Coelacanths are a group of ancient fish that were thought to be extinct until a living specimen was discovered in 1938. They are known for their unique lobed fins and historical significance in the study of evolution. Coelacanths are deep-sea dwellers found in the Indian Ocean and are considered "living fossils" due to their resemblance to ancient fish species.

What do coelacanths eat?

Coelacanths primarily feed on fish, squid, and crustaceans. They are opportunistic predators, hunting for prey in the deep ocean using their unique sensing abilities to detect movement and vibrations in the water.

Are the coelacanths okay?

Not really. In 1995, results from a dive counted about 40 coelacanths. The number has changed since then, but coelacanths are still nowhere near abundant. South African fisherman who fish for oilfish sometimes catch a coelacanth by accident. Without the strength to swim hundreds of meters back to their habitat, they usually die. Some of them get sold to scientists. As far as we know, coelacanths are very rare. Prior to around 1940, we thought they were extinct. They are still in danger.

Where is the coelacanths habitat?

Coelacanths have been found off the coast of southern Africa near Madagascar.
