People use pumpkins for Halloween and cooking. The parts of the pumpkins that are used for cooking are the seeds and the skin. Seeds can be fried in oil with salt and skins are used for stuff like pie.
Cut up and bake (or boil) the pumpkin immediately on Halloween night after your trick-or-treaters have stopped coming and you turn out the porch lights (to assure freshness). Baking does not require cutting off the skin, but it helps if boiling. After the meat of the pumpkin is tender, it can be food processed and used in pumpkin bread, pumpkin soup, pumpkin butter and as one would use a winter squash (as a vegetable).
The seeds can be cleaned, placed on a baking sheet, salted and baked. They make a great snack but you need to remove the shell to eat it.
Pumpkins can be used for a few different things. For holidays like Halloween they are carved or decorated, or used as decorations for other holidays like Thanksgiving, too. In the fall and winter (when the pumpkin market is at its best), pumpkins are commonly used in baking and cooking.
The most familiar use of pumpkins is in pies. But they are also used in all sorts of baked desserts, including cakes, cookies and puddings. Pumpkins can also be served baked, roasted or steamed as vegetables, in soups and in stews, used in pancakes, muffins, breads and rolls, and in preserves and condiments. Pumpkins are also used in many seasonal beers and ales.
