A hamster has a short tail, a rat has a long, slender tail
Hamsters live 1-3 years, while rats live 2-5 years
Rats require more food than hamsters
Rats are longer in length than hamsters
Well i study animals at my secondary school with my two friends and we have taken a hamster and a gerbil and experimented with different things. The hamster may have a tail but only a small one. A gerbils tail is long and thin like a worm. A hamster has flat legs and can scurry fast where as a gerbil has legs like a kangaroo and hops more than scurry's. We also released a pack of dwarf hamsters and a pack of ordinary American gerbils brought up in England in their own special area at Marwell and Longleat zoo's. They where both done with the equel amount of care but it seems that the Hamsters more liked to be left on their own although they did not bite where as the gerbils did bite but mabye that was because all the kids holding it dropped them and they lost trust in humnas so we releasd them with tags. 5 out of 5 returned from their treck for a week.
although a hamster is also a rodent you can still have them as pets and rats to and rats have long tails but hamsters have a short tails
The difference between a gerbil and a hamster is pretty different gerbils are awake during the day and hamsters are awake during the night and hamsters usually don't have long tails. They are many types of hamsters when they are just different colored gerbils and gerbils usally live in a group to 2 or more when hamsters can be put together but males might fighte so not a good idea hope that helped:)
It is possible. a hamster should not be kept with a gerbil. The hamster may also try kill the gerbil if it dislikes it.
