Charlie was a Tuna.
At one time, StarKist Tuna was owned by Del Monte and at another time it was owned by H. J. Heinz Company. The brand is now owned by Dongwon Industries, a large company based in South Korea.
The phrase "sorry charlie", comes from the Charlie Tuna Starkist Commercials in the early 1970's.

According to Wikipedia, StarKist is a DelMonte brand, though its owners are Dongwon Industries. (DelMonte sold the brand to Korea-based Dongwon in 2008.)

An rumor went around the internet in 2008 that claimed Nancy Pelosi's husband, Paul Pelosi owned stock in Starkist. Similar to most rumors, as the story goes around, the facts are changed. Paul Pelosi owns neither the Bumble Bee or Starkist companies.
The Hanalei Shipwreck, also known as the Vaitogi Shipwreck, belonged to the Polynesian-based StarKist Tuna company. The ship ran aground in American Samoa in 1967 and remains a popular tourist attraction on the island.
