What is the difference between sedentary and free swimming fishes?

As the name implies Sedentary fish do not move much and can usually be found on the substrate of a tank, such as most catfish or Plecos. Free swimming move more and up in the upper areas of the tank from mid to top levels such as most cichlids and most tetras.
