European Munster and American muenster are different. The American cheese is a semi-softwhite cheese with a bland taste. It's chief virtue is it's comparatively low fat. European Munster is a sharp tasting softer cheese with quite distinct taste.

Yes, there is a cheese called munster as well as a cheese called muenster. Munster cheese is a French cheese that is very soft while muenster cheese is American and has a more solid consistency and orange "rind".
