They never have. If your coin has a hole and is a US coin then someone drilled it in. It was not done at a US mint.
Most likely, the hole was created by someone, and if you think it was an accident at the mint, then stop reading here. if i were you, i would sell that half dime for the price of silver used
It wasn't done at the mint. Someone may have drilled a hole to hang the coin on a lanyard, to use it as a washer, or even because they had too much time on their hands. Unfortunately the hole destroys any collector's value the coin may have had.
4.5 million It is not worth 4.5 million, a-hole. . .
The Quarter-Farthing coin was minted by the Royal mint in 1839, 1851, 1852 and 1853 for use in Ceylon. They were not minted with a hole in them. Modified coins have no collector value. Without the hole, a circulated coin, depending on year and condition, might get anything from £10 to £150 GBP.
The hole in the middle not only removes any collector value it may have had, but it also removes its legal tender status. However, it is worth almost 5 cents for the metal it contains.
