∙ 11y agoThe earliest known carrots were from Afghanistan and were purple in colour. Elsewhere in Central Asia other variant colours were found, including white and yellow. It is believed that the orange may have come about from a mutation that increased the amount of carotene, which gave it the orange colour and that this probably happened in Europe (although some argue that the additional carotene could have been deliberately added). It is also suggested by some that once the orange carrot was discovered, it was popularised in Holland where it was promoted as a vegetable that could represent and celebrate William of Orange. Other colour varieties are still available but have not had the commercial success seen with the orange variety.
No. Purple is the original color of the carrots. Orange came around much later then purple through cross breading certain carrots. http://www.carrotmuseum.co.uk/history.html

Carrots can come in various colors, including red, but their most common color is orange. Red carrots get their color from high levels of lycopene, a natural pigment found in some vegetables. This pigment gives red carrots their distinctive color and also provides antioxidant benefits.
Yes, there are purple carrots. They are a unique variety of carrots that contain anthocyanin, a pigment that gives them their purple color. Purple carrots are not only visually appealing but also contain beneficial antioxidants.
