Escamochas are a Mexican Fruit Desert. On the Mexican side(at least along San Diego/Tijuana) you'll find them at places known as paleterias or neverias usually named La Michoacan(might be misspelled). Usually they're put in glass with the fruit at the bottom or middle layer. Fruits are usually Pears, apples, strawberries, banannas, sometimes mangos, guavas, or whatever the customer prefers. Then the fruit is mixed with sweented and condensed milk or La Lechera as known in Mexico. It's topped off with granola, coconut flakes, and raisins, and sometimes honey. Of course every place makes it different, and some places are more decorative than others. Also there's the individual making it. On the U.S. side or here in San Diego they're served at places that advertise Tortas(that's a sandwich), or fruit salads. It's a Mexican version of healthy eating. Curiously many people that sterotype Mexican foods as just tacos and burritos never heard of any of this. Also when they cross the border they tend to walk right by paleterias and don't give a thought to trying any of it. Sad because the best thing to do in Mexico is actually eat stuff like escamochas. Worst thing you can do is get drunk on Tequila, and find yourself robbed or in jail because you attracted the wrong elements or you were a nusiance to the right elements.
