They brought the recipe to the country with them and it is now considered a South African delicacy. It is a favorite desert on the South African desert menus. The name 'Malva' came from Malvacea wine that used to be served with the pudding in the 17th century. The desert was considered a "taste of home" for the Dutch living in the newly established colony.
