They are very interesting pets. They only live for about two years. they are very inexpensive and their supplies are easy to replace. I have a pet hamster and he is my best friend funniest little thing ever. If you a wondering what kind of hamster to get i personally recommend a teddy bear hammy. *TIP*
dwarf hamsters go insane and get very mean.
In mu opinion yes because they are small and cute but if you do get one for your 12 year old son or daughter make sure to watch your child is trying to handle it or even help them just in case they drop it or if it jumps out your child's hand.

A hamster is better because birds are loud and annoying and hamsters are nice and quite.
