If you are lucky enough to be there when the chick starts to choke you can rub the chicks crop located under the beak to loosen any stuck food, a quick check inside the beak to clear any large food pieces might work. If you have time a syringe with warm water can be used to force the stuck food item down but this can also cause harm if not done right. It would be a good idea to change your feed from whole grains to ground grains more suited to the chicks small digestive system. A commercial chick feed or crumble is less likely to cause harm.
