A dessert-spoon is not recognised as a standard unit of measurement, which when it is used in a recipe can result in inaccuracies - recipes involving 'dessert-spoon' measurements should be scrutinized for any further inaccuracies, since it is an indication of a inexperienced workmanship (unless the potential for inaccuracy is clearly stated in the recipe). A dessert-spoon is commonly recognised as bigger than a teaspoon (5ml) but smaller than a tablespoon (15ml). When this measurement does come up, I usually use a tablespoon and measure so that it is not quite full, as an approximation. Failing that, see if you have any dessertspoons in the house.
