The pet store you bought your fish from should have speacil food for your type of fish. My food container says 6-8 pellets once a day. Be careful to watch and make sure your fish dosent get bloated.
3-4 flakes a day
Try one flake to see if its hungry and then put in 3 or 4. If you are looking for a snack for your fish try Frozen blood worms or live brine shrimp. For the first 2 days don't feed your fish, the nervousness mixed with digestion sometimes killes them and if that doesn't some times with they let out poisonus fumes if they eat when nervous that can kill them as well. Its hard for the first few days not to feed them but after a while its okay.
Once a day is adequate. And you should not have to feed if you go away for a weekend. Fish are alright fasting for a day or two. Feed what your fish will eat within two minutes is a common guideline, but remember that what you put into the bowl stays in the bowl. Eventually waste will build up potentially killing the fish if you arent careful. Change the all the water in a bowl once a week, and only 1/3 of the water once a month if your betta is in a filtered tank. You can prolong changing the water in a bowl if you feed less, or less often. Say you feed once every 2 days, you may get away with a water change every 2 weeks. Your fish will be better off if he is fed with a betta specialized food, like flakes, freezedried bloodworms, or betta pellets.
Once a day, i do it at night.
It depends some on the fish you have, active fish will need more energy (food) in a day that stationary fish. Larger fish have a bit more reserves than smaller fish. Most any healthy tank could survive a two day weekend without food, but anything more than that will endanger your fishes health not by starvation but by weakened immune systems allowing fish to get diseased. At three or four days your are damaging your fishes health and by five days you should expect to see some dead fish. Buy an automatic fish feeder (some of the nicer ones use food you put in an will feed for 14 days) and you should never have to find out.
