Saltwater clams can live out of water for a few days. By a few I don't mean a week, I'm saying 2 or 3 days tops at room temp, but it's a good idea after buying saltwater clams if they haven't purged already, to put them in a bucket and let them purge themselves for a day and if you don't eat them right away put them in the fridge to keep them cool and slow down their metabolism.
Also, if you are going to shuck the clams to eat raw it's a good idea to put them on ice first for a while or the fridge, this makes it easier to get the shell open when using the shucking knife.
