Irregularity is not simply an inconvenience. It can quickly become a medical emergency. It can also turn into a chronic condition, resulting in damage to internal organs, toxicity, or even death, in some cases.
Most bouts of recurring irregularity respond very well to eating a diet which is rich in high fiber food. It is no surprise that our lifestyle and food choices are often depleted of high fiber foods, and nutrients, as well. Even with all the literature recommending eating healthier, many of us resort to old habits, grabbing what is convenient, or tastes good.
How do we adopt a high fiber food diet? The answer is easy. Eat more unprocessed food. To identify unprocessed food, there is a rule of thumb you can use. If it is in it’s natural state, such as an apple would be, it is unprocessed. If it is fresh meat, is is usually processed only enough to cut it into steaks or ground into hamburger. You can still consider this unprocessed, as they have not added or taken anything away from the raw food.
High meat diets are not good choices for a high fiber food diet, however, as meat has little fiber. Also low in fiber are cheese, fish, and eggs, even though they are in their natural state. Instead, focus more on the plant kingdom.
Fiber is present in any plant. Fiber is usually in the form of cellulose, which adds structure to plants. High fiber food diets do not mean eliminating meat and fish. However, non-fiber foods should be kept as ingredients, rather than the main focus of a meal. The traditional Chinese diet is a good example. It focuses more on vegetables, rice and fruits, all of which are high fiber foods. White rice, however, is processed, therefore, brown rice (which still has its bran), makes a higher fiber food.
Start increasing high fiber foods simply by adding fresh fruits as snacks. If that is comfortable, begin to add more salads to your meals. Switch to 100% whole grain breads. Learn interesting ways to cook fresh vegetables just so they are tender-crisp. Remember, too, that overcooking breaks down fiber.
