Before the female lobster starts molting, she goes near a male's den and releases her scent in a stream of urine. When he emerges from his den, the two spar briefly, then the female places her claws on his head to let him know she is ready to molt and mate.

Depending on what they are fighting about, hermit crabs can fight in a few different ways.

If it is a fight over a shell another crab is wearing, the aggressor will grab the other crab by the upper lip of the shell and start trying to (sometimes quite violently) shake him loose from his shell. This is often how they fight over a mate.

If it's a simple fight over food or for dominance, they will raise their legs & claws at each other, try to knock each other over or even snip at each other with their claws.

Now, that being said, captive hermit crabs rarely fight seriously if all their needs are met.
