Your salivary glands are stimulated setting in process a motion much alike to the one when you really eat food. The sugar and flavoring agent in the gum adds to the effect.
So you may feel a bit of hunger relief though you can't fool your body for long that way.
As your stomach is used to swallowing after you chew, it doesn't help you appetite. I would recommend eating a big meal before you chew gum.
