No. To make a very tasty vanilla miklshake all you need is:

Makes one milk Shake (about 12oz)

1 cup (8 oz) Vanilla Ice Cream

1/2 cup (4 oz)Milk

1 oz vanilla flavored syrup (Torani is a name brand, you can find it in the coffee aisle)

a good blender

To make one milk shake, you simply scoop out the ice cream, add the milk, and vanilla syrup and blend until smooth.

If you cant find the vanilla syrup, you can omit it and it will still taste good, just a little less sweet, and less intense vanilla flavor.

You can make your own vanilla simple syrup, but then that will require the use of vanilla extract.

Vanilla Simple Syrup:

1 part sugar to 1 part water, combine in a sauce pan over medium heat until all sugar is dissolved. No need to boil! Then add in about 1 tsp vanilla extract for every 16oz of syrup.

Enjoy!

Vanilla is not absolutely necessary to pancake batter, but it adds a very pleasant taste that most people enjoy.
