The growing of asparagus is a labour of love and patience. Asparagus is grown from 'crowns' these crowns take at least one year to cultivate, they are also expensive to buy, currently around £1.30 each.

Once you have acquired your crowns you need to dig trenches, these require a rich manuring to prepare for the planting, a further year of growth must pass before asparagus can be harvested, once in season the the crop needs to be hand cut daily. Finally the cutting season is very short, approximately 7 weeks from 1st May to 20th June.
