Well, I came here to find the answer to that myself. Had a sweet tooth before bed last night and make some toast with grape jelly. The jelly is rather old, but has always been refrigerated. Woke up with abdominal cramping, severe nausea and headache. So, I thought it may have been the jelly - which is now in the trash.

It can, but it depends what is in the rotten food - and what you mean by rotten.

If you are thinking that microbially adulterated food is rotten or spoiled, realize that the people who consume food involved in a foodborne outbreak did not smell or see anything wrong with the food they ate.

If the food is truly rotten, a person would almost have to be starving to get it past their nose. I have heard people describe yogurt as the controlled spoilage of milk.
