Use a clean toothpick. Insert it into the center of the cake and pull back out. If it comes out with any sign of cake / cake batter, the cake is NOT done. If there is NO sign of cake or batter on the toothpick, it is done. Usually, you try in center and a couple places just out from the center. If you need to check again later, use a new clean toothpick.
