The betta fish will see the mirror and then will be curious about it, because the mirror reflects the betta fish and they might think that it is another fish, so the fish will act differently.
Many people have modified freshwater ecosystems by putting dams in front of rivers.
You can place a mirror in front of it and it will fight as though it was another betta. However if you keep the mirror in for too long your betta will get stressed out and die, so best not to do that.
Your new betta is nervous. Some fish, including the betta, are quite intelligent. The fish is simply scared at the moment. Give it a week or so to get used to its new environment and it will stop doing this. Our bettas were skittish when we first brought them home, but now they come to the sides of their tanks when we get near them. Just be patient, and your bettas will adjust and will warm up to you.
