∙ 13y agoNo. It's not as strong, and it's more absorbent, and if you try what you're going to wind up with is a big mess.
It can work for some applications. For example it works well when draining whey from yogurt to thicken it or when draining liquid from vegetables like grated onion or spinach. You have to use the paper towels in combination with a sieve or strainer to help it hold up since it isn't as strong as cheese cloth, but it can work.

∙ 13y agoIt used to be the kind of cloth people used to wrap cheese in. It is also used in making cheese by putting the cheese cultures in it and using the cloth to strain the liquid from the solid.
White cloth filters are called cheese cloth.
