Basically potato chips don't satisfy the generally recognised sci definition of being alive i.e. potato chips do not self replicate are not consuming energy or forming waste products.

In the same way a cow is alive but a steak is dead, a potato is a living organism which, given the right conditions, will grow into a plant. A chip is dead, fried.
