My wife and I were given two hermit crabs as a gift, and we kept them as pets. These crabs were very entertaining, and definitely not shy. But alas, one day one of them decided to eat the other one. We got so mad, we set the surviving cannibal loose in a park. We didn't want him anymore. Perhaps it is best to let hermit crabs live out their lives in their natural habitat...
Hermit crabs are very smart. I have two, both of which, I have been able to TRAIN. They can learn their name and know their owners voice. They can learn to come when you call them and a few other words like NO. You can teach them how to do tricks and how to follow you around. but in order to do any of these things you have to develop a trust bond. Call them by their names as much as you can so they can learn it. Be careful not to mess with trying to train them too much. Have one or two 20 minute sessions every week. soon they will be trained.
Hermit crabs are very smart. They can not only be taught to come when you call them, but if you show them where to find something, they will 'tech' other crabs the same. In the wild & in captivity, older crabs will show the younger crabs where the food is, good places to climb, etc. It's been suggested they are as smart as dogs.
Some are not shy they are scared. Not of you just of being around a new place.
Yes, they are shy though. If you give them a chance to pinch you, they will.
Hermit crabs burry themselves to moult, to create a stable humidity and temperature below ground if above ground isn't proper for them, and to hide and by shy if they aren't feeling safe.
