Actually, I used to have a Betta Fish... but then it died. If you put a mirror up to them... then they'll start to puff up... and show their fighting technique. I guess that the more you do this the better they'll get.
Yes they will puff at anything they feel as a threat. once i got a cut on my thumb and i was feeding him and i had a band aid on and he puffed at that. and if you scare him sometimes he'll puff at that. so anything really that will threaten a beta, they will puff at.
To make themselves look larger and more threatening to another Betta.
No, this is pretty normal behaviour and you shouldn't be concerned.
no, beta fish are known to do that as a warning. they probably don't know you and feel threatened.Male beta don't like other males and are known to puff up and fight

Normal fish do not puff up- only puffer fish.
The male will puff up his gills to scare the female by looking bigger. If the male betta looks straight at you when he is flaring, it makes him look bigger. He follows the female to scare it away.
Look up on the internet DIY pygmy puff.
a suffolk puff is a piece of fabric which is gathered up to make a puff.
Simple observation. You will either see them fighting or see the damage on the fish that indicates they have been fighting.
It means he hates you. Bettas flare their gills out when they're trying to scare another betta away, or to impress a female with how large he is.
