If it is a tropical tank then about 12 hours on and the same off because the fish (and plants) come from the tropics where the days and nights do not vary much. If the tank is coldwater then it depends on what you want. You could have the same day length as is happening where you live. It's up to you.
Salt water fish should not be kept in fresh water. I dont how long they will survive but you shouldnt keep them in fresh water at all. If you have an emergency and you need to put them in fresh water, try to keep them in there for as short of a time as possible
