Not very often will a hermit crab eat one of its companions. However, if that hermit crab is lacking nutrients in his diet they are more prone to become cannibalistic. One must feed a well balanced diet as well as plenty of protein and chitin. Most chitin sources are protein, but not all protein sources contain chitin.
All hermit crabs eat a variety of diets from fruits and plants, dead animals and insects, even feces.
