I have done both overseas, my one caution in using the ATM's overseas is be careful. Both uses are expensive when withdrawing cash. The only advantage of the credit card is that if something goes wrong you can stop the transaction. I used my debit in a Rome ATM to get cash and the machine didn't give me the cash but the money was taken out of my account. I contacted the bank before leaving Italy and they replaced the money I lost, but it took some doing and a few hours work on my part. Before you leave the states make sure you tell your credit cards and the bank where you are going for how long because if you don't they will freeze your card.

The cost-effectiveness of using debit or credit cards in France can depend on various factors, including the specific terms and fees associated with your individual cards and your financial institution. Generally, debit cards might be more cost-effective as they are often associated with lower fees, especially for international transactions. However, credit cards may offer additional benefits such as travel rewards or purchase protection.
To get the most accurate information, it's recommended to check with your bank or credit card provider about any foreign transaction fees, currency conversion fees, or other charges that may apply when using your cards in France. Additionally, consider notifying your bank of your travel plans to avoid any potential issues with card usage abroad.
I asked this to a friend of mine who now lives in France
I wrote a summary of what they said.
In France, it is generally cheaper to use a debit card for transactions, as there are often fewer fees associated with debit card usage.
Debit cards are linked directly to the cardholder's bank account and typically do not incur additional charges beyond any foreign transaction fees that may be imposed by the bank. Credit cards, on the other hand, may come with additional fees, such as foreign transaction fees, cash advance fees, and potentially higher interest rates if the balance is not paid off in full each month.
I hope that this helped!
Based on the cards I have, if it is a debit card the word Debit appears on the front above the Visa, Mastercard or American Express logo. Credit cards typically only contain the logo.
