When I lived in Tempe, we would get snails in our garden so they seem to be able to live there. I only ever saw them in the garden so I'm not sure that they live in AZ naturally and I would assume that they needed the shade and moisture provided by our plants to survive. There were quite a lot of them because we would have to leave out pans of beer to kill some of them off to prevent them from destroying our plants. Nice way to go, really.
