Miss Havisham trained Estella to be cruel to men as a means of seeking revenge for the pain and betrayal she experienced from men in her past, particularly from her jilted lover. She wanted Estella to break men's hearts just as her own was broken. Miss Havisham's actions were a twisted way of projecting her own pain onto Estella and perpetuating a cycle of suffering.

After being deceived and humiliated by a male suitor and her half brother, Miss Havisham seeks vengeance on men, the gender who took advantage of her trust in them. The suitor was able to do this during the time he gained her affections so Miss Havisham distrusts all romantic relationships as well as men. Since no other suitor comes to her door, (that she could potentially punish), Miss Havisham raises a little girl to spurn the affections of all males as she was spurned through romantic relationships. Estella is very pretty and is likely to be an heiress to Miss Havisham's fortune so she received the attentions of many men and Miss Havisham vicariously is able to punish her jilted lover every time Estella is mean to a male. One of the tragedies of the novel is that Pip genuinely cares for Estella, as Miss Havisham cared for the man who treated her badly and Miss Havisham eventually realizes that her training of Estella didn't "even the scales" between men and women as much as create another insensitive, uncaring person to victimize innocent people.

Miss Havisham adopted Estella so that she can teach Estella how to break the hearts of men, just as her fiance broke her heart.
