Fanny Burney was a successful author who preceded Jane Austen, and whose novels Jane Austen read. Her novel, Evelina is about a young woman of marriageable age. It is presented in a manner that is witty and comic. It deals with the problems women have in a world dominated by men, when their success depends on marrying a man of some means. I satirizes the society of its time, and especially its hypocrisy. These themes appear frequently or consistently in Jane Austen's writings.
Evelina consists of a series of letters and so is what is called an epistolary novel. Jane Austen's early work is of this form, and even her later work uses letters to advantage, to explain a person's point of view in his own words.
It is said that even the title, Pride and Prejudice, comes from Fanny Burney's writing. It is probably more fair to say the words appear there and might have influenced Austen, as we have no record of why she chose that title.
