A plot is a storyline and develops like this;

  • What happens first
  • what happens next
  • what happens after that
  • what are the conflicts
  • what are the resolutions
  • what is the rising action
  • the climax of the story
  • the falling action
  • what happens at the end

More from the WikiReaders:

  • A plot is essentially what happens in a story. If you are asked to describe the plot, you are being asked, "What happened in the book?"
  • The plot is the main story line, the main theme, of a play. A plot may have sub-plots but there is always a primary plot. To understand the idea of "plot" better, the next time you watch a movie or play, write down how you would describe the major action or point. Limit yourself to 3 to 5 sentences only. Try to avoid using the character's names. For example, if you write the synopsis of: John loved Mary but the distance between them was too great to allow their relationship to bloom and Mary rejected John", you could narrow that to "the unrequited love of a long-distance relationship".
  • The plot of a story is the base of it. What it's about, what happens, what drives the story forward, why does this character do this thing, the plot is what gives a story movement.

A plot of the story is the story itself, the heart and soul of the story. In barest terms the plot of say Lord of the Rings would sound something like this; A member of a childlike humanoid species called hobbits find a magic ring belonging to an evil magician and sets out to destroy the ring and said evil dude and all the stuff in between. The overall point and flow of a story. A story is the plot while the medium to tell the story is not the story, a book is not a story and someone speaking a story is not a story these are simply the means to convey the plot/story/saga/poem.

the events that occur in resolving the conflict, or some minor deviance of the conflict.

The plot of a book is not just the same thing as the summary. The summary is exactly that, it summarizes the book very briefly. The plot is different. In fiction, the plot is a sequence of consistent events arranged to form a pattern and achieve an intended effect, in other words, the plot is a sequence of events that leads up to the most important part of a story, the climax. Along with character, setting, theme, ans style, plot is considered one of the needed components of fiction. Plot Structure First is the Conflict: A problem Then Rising Action: The suspense or trill that leads to the climax Then Climax: The high point, a moment most intense, a turning point, a major culmination of events. Then Falling Action: The falling action is the part of a story following the climax and shows the effects of the climax And Last Resolution: The part of the story in which the problem of the story is resolved or worked out.

In The Poetics, Aristotle defines Plot as "The Arrangement (Structure, Order) of the Incidents (Episodes, Scenes)."
