Artillery manages to kill three tripods but then there is a gas defense invented and the army is useless. # The narrator hides with a parson in an abandoned house which that night is on the rim of a new crater from another landing Martian object. # The two live for four days in the wreckage of the house observing the horrific activities of the Martians eating people. # The Parson goes crazy and his ranting brings the Martians to investigate. Close call number 5. # The narrator makes it to the coast but fails to get on a ship.
