The James Bond films are based on a series of novels written by Ian Lancaster Fleming (1908-1964) from 1953 to 1964 (with two published posthumously).
According to the Ian Fleming novels, James Bond was educated at Eton, and later Fettes College. In the films however, it seems to be alluded that Bond went to Oxford instead.
In the novels he used a black oxidized Ronson lighter.
Ian Flemming never gave Bond a birthday in the original novels, but it is speculated that he was born between 1917-1924.
Ian Fleming wrote the original novels. Since then, Kingsley Amis, John Gardner, Raymond Benson and Sebastian Faulkes have all wrote Bond novels.

I recommend it. However, read any of them you can find and decide for yourself. For the more familar Bond, perhaps start with Dr. No or Goldfinger, then go back to the more dark 1st novel Casino Royale.
