There is no scientific evidence to definitively prove the existence of extraterrestrial life, but the vastness of the universe makes it possible that alien life could exist. Many scientists are actively searching for signs of alien life through projects like SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence).
The 'jury is still out' on this one. From a personal point of view - I refuse to believe we are the only planet in the entire universe that has life on it ! Just because we have no tangible proof that extra-terrestrial life exists - doesn'tmean we're alone. There could be a number of reasons we've not encountered 'aliens' on earth - maybe we're just not interesting enough for them to make the trip !
Our species has been asking this question for centuries.
In 1961, astrophysicist Frank Drake formed a scientific way to estimate the answer to this question.Today, researchers Adam Frank and Woodruff Sullivan have reimagined Drake's equation.
Drake's equation is long and complicated.Basically, he says that to prove the existence of extra-terrestrial intelligent life, you have to consider the number of stars, the stars with planets, the planets with conditions for life, the environments that actually produce life, the life that's intelligent, the intelligent life that communicates in a way that we could observe from space, and the lifetimes of the beings initiating that communication.
"Get caught in the weeds do not."Drake's equation gets stuck when one asks how long a civilization may send signals into space, because our own experience is our only sample.
That's why this new equation is much more accurate.Researchers now look beyond the Milky Way and eliminate a finite period of time.
So, basically, they got nerdy and boiled down Drake's equation. They essentially say the number of technological species is a function of habitable planets in the universe times the likelihood of a technological species living on one of those planets.
In much simpler terms, they reduced the number of variables from seven to two. They also expanded the question to cover the entire 13-billion-year existence of the universe.
In short, based on their thought process, it's pretty unlikely that we're alone. The likelihood that we're the only technological species is about the same as the likelihood of getting struck by lightening four times in a single year.
There is yet another way of saying how unlikely it is that we're alone. The chances are one in 10 billion trillion that we're the only ones in the universe.
We still don't know how to get in touch with any of these potential peer civilizations. There's something both comforting and terrifying about knowing we're almost definitely not alone in the universe.
