The Barbary Wars were resolved through a series of military conflicts between the United States and the Barbary States of North Africa (such as Tripoli, Algiers, and Tunis). The conflicts ended with the signing of peace treaties and agreements that secured the release of American prisoners and protected American shipping from piracy in the Mediterranean. The Treaties of Peace and Amity signed in 1805 and 1816 formally ended the hostilities between the two sides.
There were two Barbary wars. The first one lasted from 1801 to 1805 and the second one took place in 1815. Both were fought on the Barbary Coast.
Jefferson was president when the Barbary Wars started. The war was mainly started because the president refused to pay tributes that were demanded by the Barbary slaves.
