They are related by the means which the author employs to relate them. The two are not inherently related, they can be quite independent.

For example the theme of "high noon" is duty. The theme of "Lady Nightengale" is duty. The subject of one is a shoot-em-up western, the subject of the other is a hospital.

The theme of a story is the message or lesson conveyed, while the subject is the topic or main idea. The theme is typically abstract and can apply to various subjects, while the subject is more concrete and specific. The subject helps to convey the theme by providing context and detail.

How is a theme different from a subject?

No. The subject is more nuts and bolts. It would be something like 'A group of scientists get on a space craft and hike on out to Jupiter (Saturn in the book) to see if they can find evidence of alien artifacts there. It deals with the actual situation and the people involved. The theme is more of what the story means in philosophical terms. It would be something like 'There are things in the universe that are beyond the ability of man to comprehend.' The above is the subject and theme of the story 2001: a space odyssey.
