Can someone explain the story of the Mexican scary story of Llorna?

It's an ancient Mayan story about a woman so obsessed with a man that she destroys what she loves most in the world -- her children -- in the misguided belief that she can win the man's love this way. She thinks her children are a barrier to furthering the relationship, so she drowns them. He reacts with Horror and rejects her completely. She has haunted the place of drowning ever since, weeping for her children.
When I heard the true-life story of Susan Smith drowning her children for the same reason, I thought immediately of La Llorona.

La Llorona, or the Weeping Woman, is a Mexican legend about a woman who drowned her children and roams the earth crying and looking for them. It is said that she kidnaps or drowns children who resemble her own, and her wailing is a warning for children to behave. The story is often used as a cautionary tale to keep children safe and in line.
