The proud and noble English topographical surname Thornton is first found in Cheshire, where a certain Peter Thornton was Secretary to the Blundells. The name itself was originally borne by those who lived close to "the village where the thorn bushes were plentiful".

Thornton is an English surname that originated in northern England during the Danelaw (when Scandinavians were settling England between 800-1300 or so). It literally means "the town/hill of the god Thor." In some cases, the name may have originally meant "town/hill of thorns," but this is not the most common origin by far.
