I wasn't aronud at the the time but I think it was similar to how it's celebrated today. I say that based on actual WWII documentaries depicting life in the US. Whether the commercialism is comparable, I can't say. I do recall reading somewhere that the popular Christmas songs we sing today were written during those years.

life in the 1930's was tough ww1 had not long finshed and then the Great Depression came where there was a big number of people unempolyed and living in poverty.
