Now that the US Supreme Court has ruled that same-sex couples have the constitutional right to marry, the injustice of denying them that right has come to an end in all US states and territories.
As for the threat to religious liberty, there is none. Religious institutions and clergy in the United States have always had and continue to have absolute freedom in deciding whom they will and will not marry, and which marriages they will recognize as valid. This has not changed.
The government, including all agents and employees of the government, are required and have always been required to honor the constitutional rights of US citizens and residents during the course of their work. This has not changed.
Private citizens are free to hold whatever cockamamie belief they want, with the following exceptions. In the United States, discrimination on the basis of gender and, in some states and cities, discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation is prohibited by law in certain circumstances. These circumstances may include: employment, housing, insurance, banking, health care and public accommodation. The exact circumstances under which discrimination is illegal may vary from place to place.
The most relevant fact is that courts have consistently ruled that once you open a business, you are required to serve the general public without violating applicable discrimination laws. You can refuse to look at or speak to gays, blacks, Jews, Muslims, women, foreigners, unwed mothers, divorced persons or any other group of people you hate in your private life. But, in the course of doing business, if you violate the applicable anti-discrimination laws you will be fined. This is a responsibility you accept when you enter into the business world.
If your religion does not permit you to operate a business under the same regulations that everyone else does, then you are prevented from doing so by your religious beliefs and you should find a job that your religion permits you to perform. In the United States, businesses are licensed by the government and must follow applicable laws. No one has an absolute right to run their business according to their own wishes.
