What are the merits and demerits of dowry system?

merits- as the girl goes to her husband's house after the marriage he can't enjoy her father's money,but when dowry is given to to her husband then she can enjoy her father's money as well as respect is also given to her by her husband and his relatives.

demerits-when a girl is poor then her father cannot afford it,because of that no one will marry that girl or the husband who married with her can torture her or her husband's relatives can torture.

these are the gifts given by the parents of the bride at the time of marriage. the gifts can be big like furniture t.v fridge beds etc.or jewellry clothing etc. dowry started more than 2000 yrs ago as a help for the newly married couple to settle down now it has taken bad shape in the society girls parents saves all their life huge amount of money for their daughter marriage.
