The life quality of ancient Egyptians depended greatly on their societal class. Some facts about daily Egyptian life are:
The average family lived in a village of sun-baked mud houses. The houses were fairly small with few windows or furniture. They had flat roofs that the people would sleep on in the summer when it was too hot inside.
Most of the people were farmers. They grew barley to make beer, wheat for bread, vegetables such as onions and cucumbers, and flax to make into linen. They grew their crops near the banks of the Nile River where the rich black soil was good for crops.
The people of ancient Egypt highly valued family life. They treasured children and regarded them as a great blessing. In the lower class families, the mother raised the children. The wealthy and nobility, had slaves and servants that helped take care of the children by attending to their daily needs.
Although women were expected to raise the children and take care of the household duties, there were some jobs available to them. Women ran farms and businesses in the absence of their husbands or sons. Women were employed in courts and temples as acrobats, dancers, singers and musicians. Wealthy families hired maids or nannies to help with household chores and the raising of the children. Noblewomen could become a priestess. Women also worked as professional mourners and perfume makers.
According to The Bible, the Hebrews, or Israelites, were well treated during the lifetime of Joseph and probably for some long time afterwards. Eventually, the Egyptians became afraid of the Hebrews and enslaved them, giving them hard labour to perform.
According to the respected Israeli archaeologist, Israel Finkelstein, over 90 per cent of scholars say the Israelites did not really come from Egypt in the Exodus. Instead, they were dissident Canaanites who left the coastal cities of Canaan to settle in the sparsely populated mountainous hinterland. If the Hebrews were never slaves in Egypt as described in the Bible, then we can not say that the Egyptians treated them well or badly.
