If you mean how long a couple may live in separation until they are automatically divorced.

It depends on the country, but usually married couple stays married until they apply for a divorce. No matter how far apart they would live from each other, they´d be married. No automatic divorce.

If you mean how long a couple have to live separated before they can apply for a divorce.

That is also very dependant on the country where you live. For example in my home country, Finland, a couple does not have to live separated at all. They can divorce and still keep living in the same house.

But for us there is this 'thinking time' of six months. If a couple has lived separated two years, this thinking time is ignored and a divorce can be implemented without waiting.

In the United States of America divorce laws vary from state to state. In some jurisdictions, divorce requires a party to claim fault of their partner that leads to the breakdown of marriage. Many states, including North Carolina and New York, require a one-year legal and physical separation prior to a formal divorce.
