From myself: If you know the guy pretty well--like you hang out at school, etc. etc.--then you should know what makes them laugh. If it's someone you don't really know quite as well, like a classmate across the room, it always helps to know one of that person's friends so you can get to know more about that person's sense of humor without embarrassing yourself too much or embarrassing him.
